That’s 20 girls a moment or one girl every three seconds. In reality, according to Unicef, more than 700 million women around the globe were married as kids. They’re deprived of their childhood, denied schooling, exposed to premature pregnancies, and also lose the capacity to control their own lives.
It may feel far away, or you might think it does not happen in developed countries. However, how would people react if it happened in the middle of the day … in New York?
It occurs all the time all over the world. To highlight the problem of child marriage, and show that it shouldn’t be ignored, Youtuber Coby Persin chose to do a social experiment.
What we are likely to watch is not a real, lawful child marriage. It is very important to see, however uncomfortable it makes you. We need to bring this problem to light and also spread awareness.
By staging a fake wedding between a 12-year-old girl and a 65-year-old guy, Coby Persin wanted to demonstrate how people reacted. In the experiment, Coby played with a photographer who pretended to take wedding pictures of the 65-year-old and his 12-year-old bride. They posed and held hands. He cried, staring down in his new bride. At first, folks simply walked by and stared.
However, the longer the experiment went on, the more angry people’s responses became.
Angry people approached the couple and faced the guy. One woman asked, among other things, where the woman’s mother was said she had been too young. Others stopped with remarks like “this is crazy”, “this isn’t appropriate”, “it is not legal” and, “you are a sick pervert”.
One woman took matters into her own hands and went so far as to pull the woman away from the guy. You could feel the pressure in the air and it was coming to a head. No one should take this, anyplace!
